Surfrider vs Sandy

surferider nyc meeting

Surfrider is kicking into action as spring rolls in! Stop by the Tuesday, April 16th 7-8:30 meeting at Pilgrim in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (no longer at Patagonia SoHo) to get involved as things get going!! Surfrider has also another event coming up.  A meeting of the eco-minds to discuss the science behind our very disgruntled environment. This will be in Wall Township, NJ, but worth the trip (take the train to Belmar). Spend Earth Day (yes, 4.20) building a community garden in Rockaway and Sunday learning about global warming…sounds like a damn good weekend! Tree seedlings will be given to the first 100 attendees.  If you live in NY, you could probably use some more greenery.

New York Surf Film Festival

It’s that time of year. New York Surf Film Festival takes over Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg September 19th and 20th, playing a selection of surf documentaries. They all look amazing, but at $15 a film, one is forced to be selective. Plus, the invite-only opening night filmmakers party on Tuesday and a final party on Friday hosted by badass female swimwear Calavera. More details on NYC Urchin Facebook and Instagram @nycurchin.

Let’s go Out to Sea a Movie

It may be rainy and dreary in NY today, but there are some awesome events going on in Rockaway today (more info) and tonight a movie screening on The Lilac steamship, parked conveniently on the water off TriBeCa. Tonight’s screening is the NY premiere of the documentary Liemba about a steamship that still serves communities of Lake Tanganyika in central Africa. Music and cash bar begin at 8pm, movie starts at 9. Hudson River Park Pier 25 (directions).

To get a feel of the rustic and authentic nature of The Lilac and her crew, here are some photos from R44 Rogan Standard Issue (awesome sustainable menswear brand) – they volunteered for a day cleaning up the ship, prepping it for the youth environmental classes that are regularly hosted aboard. Get involved.

Galapagos Presents Ocean Size

What: Friends at gallery Kunsthalle Galapagos present Ocean Size, running Feb 18 – March 4.  The opening reception is TONIGHT, Feb 18th 6-9pm, so drift over for some good art and a good time.

Location: Kunsthalle Galapagos, 16 Main St. DUMBO, Brooklyn. (Take the F to York Street or AC to High Street).  Gallery Hours: Thurs – Sun 1-6pm

Expect: “A group exhibition of six artists who question our perceptions of reality. Their works coax us to join them in fantastical worlds of bold colors, precise lines, and mutated patterns. Distorted characters and fragments morph and fray into an ordered chaos. Disjointed narratives, found memories and alter-egos situate us, then shift our perceptions of our own state of being.  The work compels us to reach beyond our own comprehension to something bigger than ourselves, something “ocean size”.

Cruise on Over to BAM

We headed to BAM to check out Kymia Nawabi‘s exhibit – she won the show Work of Art – and  strolled past this low-lying installation and felt oddly compelled, for the first time, to steal a piece of art (though we of course did not, or did we?).  Mounir Fatmi (Moroccan, born in 1970) carpeting the floor of a BAM gallery space with fifty skateboards covered in patches of Islamic prayer rugs.  Maximum Sensation “examines cultural hybridity and the collision of cultures in a globalized world.”

Aesthetically reminds us of the Celine skateboards, but with cultural implications that extend beyond merely looking cool.  If you haven’t been to BAM, it’s worth a look and is easily accessible by public transit (directions).  Wander for free on the first Saturday of every month, 5-11pm, provided by Target.
